Laura Machanic
President & CEO

Laura Machanic is President and CEO of New Target, Inc. A native of Alexandria, VA, Laura has been instrumental in New Target’s strong growth and success. An entrepreneur with a marketing background, she also brings international perspective to the company. She was the founder of Travel Russia, Inc. and co-founder of Service Adventures, Inc., both operating in the former Soviet Union during the early 1990s. Much of New Target's success can be attributed not only to its technical expertise, but also to Laura’s ability to build long term relationships with the company’s diverse clients.

Laura founded New Target in 1998 and has grown the company into one of the Washington area’s leading web design and development firms. In addition to setting strategy and direction for New Target, Laura works closely with many of the company’s clients collaborating on their Web strategies and initiatives. She brings marketing expertise and an integrated team approach to all New Target projects.

Laura provides strategic and tactical guidance to New Target's project teams. Laura empowers project teams to succeed by providing the right tools, including the availability of seasoned staff, the management of project budgets, and making certain the New Target team has all resources required to deliver award-winning websites. Laura's commitment to excellent customer service and the delivery of the highest-quality products and services are the fundamental drivers of New Target's approach.

Laura is a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall and after two years at the University of Virginia, graduated from Columbia University in New York with a degree in political science. She represents the fourth generation of entrepreneurs in her family.

When not at the office, Laura is likely to be enjoying time on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with her family, working on restoring her historic home, at the ballet with her Mom, or talking shop with her Dad. (Before she was married with kids, this used to say “skydiving in Australia, catching a show in New York with her mom, or pursuing her newfound interest in swing and salsa dancing!”!)

Brian Newsome
Vice President

Brian leads New Target’s project teams, focusing on delivering high value web solutions to all New Target clients.

Brian leverages his professional experience and academic background in strategic communication and management to provide planning and overall project guidance to clients and New Target’s project teams. He often participates in the planning phases of New Target’s projects. Brian’s focus is translating a client’s mission and objectives into deployable web solutions.

Prior to New Target, Brian worked for an Alexandria firm providing communication services and program management to many well-known federal agencies. He has worked for non-profit organizations, including the U.S. Naval Institute, and for-profit companies supporting the federal government in various leadership capacities and brings this experience to bear for New Target’s clients.

Brian holds a graduate degree in international affairs and undergraduate degree in history and political science. He is a voracious reader and enjoys exploring Virginia’s many book sales and stores for forgotten treasures. He lives in Alexandria with his wife and children. 

Irve Towers
Vice President, Hosting Services

Irve is responsible for further developing and managing the company’s hosting division and related assets. His duties include the evaluation of client technical requirements, the provisioning of hardware and software for hosting environments, and directing New Target’s hosting team and processes.

A life long resident of the Washington, D.C. area, Irve has spent most of his career in the computer industry. Joining IBM in 1973, Irve was instrumental in the rollout of the area’s first ATMs and grocery checkout scanner systems. The latter half of his tenure with IBM was spent in support of large mainframe installations. Irve was a three-time winner of the coveted IBM Means Service award.

In 1994, Irve left IBM to co-found Hub Internet Services in Arlington, Virginia. A regional, full service ISP, Hub Internet grew quickly with the new Internet until 2000 when the company was purchased by CAIS Internet of McLean, Virginia. Irve went on to manage the web hosting unit of CAIS and subsequently performed the same functions for Beyond the Network (BTN) when they purchased CAIS in mid 2001. Irve left BTN in 2002 to form his own web hosting and consulting business, TIC LLC. He joined New Target through the merger of TIC with New Target in March 2004.

Throughout his three decades in the information technology arena, Irve has always kept one thing paramount: customer service and support.

Irve enjoys the world of the Internet, computers, music, and movies. In addition, he is an avid gardener. He enjoys spending time with his wife of 38 years, his two children and two grandchildren.

Carlo Ross
Director, Business Development  

Carlo leads New Target’s business development efforts and has developed and managed communication services and technology solutions for associations, non-profits, and government clients in the metropolitan Washington area for more than 10 years.

Carlo has achieved great success as a New Target team member contributing significantly to the company’s growth over the past several years. Carlo continues to achieve success through exceptional client service. His advocacy for New Target’s clients has lead many to consider him an extension of their professional staffs. Carlo has worked with clients such as National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts, the Lupus Foundation of America, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, and International Safety Equipment Association to understand their challenges and opportunities.

Working with both electronic and print publishing services over his career, Carlo has developed business and managed projects for a variety of verticals and market segments with great success. His focus has been working with national associations, membership-driven organizations, and non-profits to support their overall missions with publishing and communication solutions and strategies.

Carlo has a degree in Business and Communications from the University of Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA.

In Carlo’s spare time he likes to stay active with sports, especially golf and basketball, and also enjoys the many cultural aspects of Washington, D.C. Carlo’s parents and two older brothers all live in the Pittsburgh area, and you will find Carlo there during most holidays visiting family and cheering on his alma mater Panthers.

David Hoernig
Director, Client Services

David serves as New Target's Director, Client Services. He leads efforts in business development, project management, web strategy, and customer service.

Prior to joining New Target, David served as Director of Product Management for Mpower Media where he lead efforts to develop highly customized and innovative DVR technologies serving consumers of television and digital media. David is well versed in areas of web technologies, association management, and managed health care, just to name a few. He founded and operated a software development consulting practice based in McLean, Virginia from which he served various commercial and government clients throughout the United States. David brings an entrepreneurial approach to his work, with a commitment to quality customer service as its cornerstone.

David earned his B.A. in Economics, with a concentration in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Richmond in 1989.  He grew up in Pennsylvania and now lives in McLean, Virginia with his wife and four children.  Although truly personal time is a rare commodity in his family of six, David enjoys basketball, an occasional round of golf, and volunteer opportunities in his community. 

Paige Wagner
Designer and Project Manager

Paige serves as a Designer, User Experience Architect, and Project Manager at New Target.

As a designer, Paige's experience ranges from brochure-style websites to user interface design for web-based applications. Paige lends her understanding of current usability standards, of the ever-popular Web 2.0 style, and of design best-practices to every project.  Her role is to guide New Target’s projects from a creative standpoint by understanding how color, graphics, and design trends will contribute to a site’s success.

Paige's project management expertise is in managing websites and applications built using open source technologies, like Joomla!, CMS Made Simple, and Drupal.  As a project manager, Paige leads the project from inception to completion by providing overall guidance to and communication between our clients and project teams.  

Paige graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Visual Communications, specializing in graphic design and photojournalism.  Prior to joining the New Target team, Paige was an associate photographer at the renown documentary photography studio, Missy McLamb Photographers in North Carolina.  In her free time, Paige enjoys sports, travelling, spending time with her family, and photography.

Patrick Geers
Project Manager

Patrick serves as a Project Manager at New Target.

He specializes in Web 2.0 technologies, E-Commerce, and Web Engineering. As a project manager, Patrick leads the project from inception to completion by providing overall guidance to and communication between our clients and project teams.

Prior to joining New Target, Patrick served as a Technical Manager/Programmer at Logic Method IT where he led efforts to develop an online controlling system for swimming pools and customization of different Content Management Systems such as Drupal, Joomla or blogging platforms like Wordpress. He also served as a Project Manager at Basecom GmbH & Co. KG in Osnabrück, Germany where he led projects on online accounting systems and website development.

Patrick earned his B.S. in Information Systems and his M.S. in Information Systems at the University of Osnabrück, Germany, where he is originally from. In his free time he enjoys playing soccer, hiking and biking.

Pedja Grujic
Director of Technology

Pedja oversees all open source and mobile software development projects advising clients and project teams on the best solutions.

With over 10 years of web programming, information architecture, and database design experience, Pedja is proficient in an array of open source CMSs, learning managment systems and social networking systems. Having worked with a variety of client's, including many foreign governments, associations, and corporations, he brings a unique insight into the challenges facing each market.  

When not leading the next open source wave of technological innovation at New Target, Pedja enjoys playing and watching soccer. He is an avid Kinect player ready for any challenger.  

Elizabeth Miltenberger
Business Development Associate

Elizabeth serves as a market research analyst and writer supporting the marketing and business development team at New Target.  

With a vocational background in project management and consulting for non-profits and affinity groups, Elizabeth contributes a great deal of practical experience to marketing and project management efforts at New Target.  

Elizabeth graduated from Louisiana State University with a B.A. in Mass Communications and a minor in History. Prior to joining the New Target team, Elizabeth worked with a firm consulting to non-profits on fundraising. Her contributions have been toward clients such as The Washington National Cathedral, Cleveland Clinic, and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.  

When she is not catching up on blogs and recent marketing trends, Elizabeth spends her time playing tennis and exploring Washington, DC.  

Becky Sheetz-Runkle
Content Strategist

Becky provides content strategy, strategic messaging, and SEO copywriting for New Target’s clients.

Becky is an author (Sun Tzu for Women: The Art of War for Winning in Business) writer, speaker, and strategic marketer. She’s a skilled SEO copywriter who stays on the leading edge of what drives visibility and credibility for New Target’s clients. Much of her career has been spent in the high tech, professional services, and government contracting sectors. With 20 years of experience in communications and marketing strategy, Becky has written countless websites and marketing materials. She co-founded Q2 Marketing, a technology marketing firm in the Washington, D.C., metro area.

Her work received the Summit Creative Awards Bronze Medal for Best-in-Class Government Web Site for the Army's HRsolutions in 2005 and the MarCom Creative Award for outstanding achievement in marketing and communications in 2005. She was named to the Washington Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 in 2011.

Her interests include martial arts, fitness, writing, traveling, gardening and enjoying animals (She’s a big fan of pit bulls.). She lives in Woodbridge, VA, with her husband, David, the cat who would prefer to be anonymous, and Buster, the dog the anonymous cat terrorizes. She graduated with Honors from Temple University and has BA degrees in political science and history.

PHP Developer

PHP Web Developer (Full Time)

We are looking to add a senior-level, front-end web developer with experience in PHP, Scripting and CSS to our development team. Primary skills should include experience building and troubleshooting websites within content management systems. This position will support client websites and will work under the leadership of our Open Source Team Lead as well as have direct communication with our project managers.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Analysis, development, deployment of client websites using standardized processes and development guidelines
  • Deployment of COTS solutions and off-the shelf CMS solutions, e.g. Drupal, WordPress, and Joomla
  • Strong ability to problem solve and troubleshoot web applications and code
  • Provide estimates for development of web projects
  • Research and learn new technologies and acquire new skills through independent study
  • Play a direct role in maintenance, technical support, documentation and administration of company-used technologies and code
  • Test web applications in multi-platform, cross-browser development
  • Evaluate vendors and solutions and make recommendations on technology

Experience

Technical Project Manager

Technical Project Manager / Account Executive (Full Time)

Are you ready to dive into a fast-paced, growing Web development company and hit the ground running? We are ready to add a highly communicative, experienced, and detail-oriented Project Manager to our bright, dynamic, and talented team. Our new technically-oriented Project Manager will manage a variety of client Web development projects that include creative, technical, and strategic components. Responsibilities of this position are organized into four key areas:

1. Project Management

  • Manage a wide range of day-to-day client interaction (in person, by phone and via email) with a reasonable number of assigned projects and accounts
  • Manage project team members to ensure the coordination of your team's efforts to come in on time for your deadlines
  • Maintain project documentation through the project cycle according to company-defined process (Meeting Notes, Status Reports, Change Orders and Client Approvals)
  • Develop and tightly manage timelines for various sized projects
  • Manage the scope of client requests to ensure timely (and profitable!) delivery while meeting stated objectives using industry-leading Project Management software
  • Increase the value of assigned projects through pro-active strategic advice/direction/upselling of the project features and options
  • Provide strategic guidance and collaboration to team members as well as, on occassion, manage/work with subcontractors and strategic partners
  • Work closely with Technical Lead and client during the requirements gathering and documentation process
  • Identify and make suggestions for ongoing improvement to company production processes
  • Perform final assessment and quality control of deliverables before delivery to client
  • Manage Client Relationships & facilitate ongoing client requests for additional work after launch of defined projects
  • Work with the accounting department to review and quality control all final invoices against the original estimates and proposals
  • Bring a technical background and understanding of web development to our projects

2. Business Development & Account Management

  • Assist in business development, including proposal writing, for existing clients/assigned accounts
  • Increase the value of assigned projects through pro-active strategic advice/direction/upselling of the project features and options (Yes, we've listed this twice in case you missed it above. Advising a client in a consultative way of their options and opportunities as you move through a project is that important a part of the role of a PM here at our company.)
  • Maintain positive relationships with existing clients.

3. Web Strategy

  • Be the authority "at the table" when talking with clients about what works and what isn't yet proven, i.e., the successes and/or downsides of approaches, options, site features, and strategies involving Web design, Web development, and Web marketing.
  • Continually bring current industry knowledge to share with your peers and team; share information and lessons learned to enlighten your team members!

4. Customer Service

  • Serve as the ultimate "owner" and responsible party for your projects and clients. Bring a "The buck stops here" "Take no prisoners!" attitude, approach and commitment to solving our clients' challenges as well as our own occassional missteps. Handle issues without the client having to worry, follow-up or ask where we are in addressing any possible, issue, concern or hopefully infrequent tough communications that does arise even for the best companies.


Skills or knowledge you will need to succeed in this role:

  • Technical Web development background a plus
  • Hands-on experience leading/managing full lifecycle Web Application Development projects from conception to completion for a minimum of 3 years. We work in .NET, Cold Fusion, MS SQL, and MySQL.
  • Strong knowledge of Web design best practices, web development processes, including at least one area of strong specialization such as information architecture, usability, requirements gathering, training, etc.
  • Experience managing government contracts a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with an outgoing, engaging approach to people
  • Ability to think critically and problem solve even when you might not be the subject matter expert on the case
  • Attention to detail, dedication to quality assurance and thorough follow-through

Web Application Developer

Web Application Developer

Busy, growing, well-established web development company in Alexandria has an opening for a web developer who will play a lead role in the company’s .NET development effort. This is an opportunity to hold a key position in a growing company.

As a developer, you support our company’s .NET development efforts by understanding client business requirements, architecting and implementing .NET CMS solutions such as Sitefinity and Sitecore, and working closely with internal team members to meet project deadlines. The ideal candidate will create prototypes for solutions, conduct research on the right technology to meet client requirements, as well as guide and mentor junior developers.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Work with team of dedicated and fast-paced developers in the creation of new web applications and enhancement of existing applications.
  • Develop, maintain and enhance websites and applications in C#, ASP.NET
  • Develop Microsoft SQL Server database queries, stored procedures and functions views for applications
  • Performance tune applications for better memory handling and better utilization of system recourses.
  • Support the applications developed
  • Follow the development standards and procedures while developing applications
  • Guide and mentor junior level developers
  • Support the applications in production and respond to client queries and clarifications when needed
  • Work closely with the QA, Release Engineers and Documentation teams to build Enterprise-level architecture

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5 to 8 years of total software development experience
  • 3 to 4 years of C# experience
  • 3 to 4 years of experience with various Content Management Systems including Sitecore and Sitefinity
  • 4 years of hands-on experience writing complex T-SQL and SQL Server development experience
  • Experience in Agile and Waterfall development methodologies and Test Driven Development

Giving Back

Alexandria City Marketing Fund

New Target CEO Laura Machanic is one of nine committee members of the Alexandria Marketing Fund, the City of Alexandria’s grant program that provides seed money for new and innovative marketing programs. The Fund is designed to increase revenues within the City by fostering public/private partnerships that promote Alexandria as a destination for visiting, shopping, dining and doing business. Appointed by City Council to this position, Ms. Machanic serves on the Committee that reviews and approves applications for funding. The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria

Since 1998, New Target has supported The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria (SFA) on its website and web initiatives. The Scholarship Fund provides last-dollar scholarships to students of Alexandria’s only public high school, T.C. Williams. From developing its first website in 1999, to showcasing gala auction items online, to accepting student applications and Telethon donations during its annual telethon, New Target has guided and supported the SFA continuously over the past decade.

Now one of the Scholarship Fund's corporate partners, New Target is the proud sponsor of its own named scholarship, the New Target Internet Scholarship, which is given each year to a student who wishes to pursue a career in technology.

First Night Alexandria

Since 2002, New Target has supported First Night Alexandria (FNA) on its website and web initiatives. First Night Alexandria is a family celebration through the performing arts, created by and for the community to welcome the New Year. First Night Alexandria’s mission is to broaden and deepen the public's appreciation of the arts through a diverse and entertaining program that offers a cultural experience. Alexandria Mayor, Bill Euille, said, “First Night is a wonderful celebration for all Alexandria! From developing several websites for the organization since 2003 and moving ticket sales online, to adding personalization to the schedule of performers, and now embarking on offering the schedule and map in mobile-friendly versions, New Target has been First Night’s technology, web and online marketing partner for more than 8 years.

City of Alexandria City Manager's Advisory Board

New Target CEO, Laura Machanic, serves on City Manager Jim Hartman’s “Advisory Board,” a small group of citizens who offer advice, perspective, and input on various City initiatives. Most recently, this group has reviewed organizational/management studies and reports evaluating various City departments on efficiencies and best practices. The Advisory Board provides candid, informal comment to the City Manager on his programs and initiatives.


American University's Kogod School of Business

New Target CEO Laura Machanic has served as a judge for American University’s Kogod School of Business’s annual Case Competition, a showcase event for Kogod MBA candidates, for the past 5 years. Student teams present business plans before panels of judges after just 24 hours of preparation, are scored and ranked by the judging panels, and then receive feedback from the judges on their concepts, presentations, financials, and more. Metered parking is almost always available steps from our door at the tennis courts at the end of our block (on the corner of Royal and Montgomery Streets). Free street parking is also available throughout the neighborhood.


Directions

From Downtown Washington, DC

Cross any of the Washington DC bridges to Virginia and take the George Washington Memorial Parkway toward Ronald Reagan National Airport. Continue past the airport into Alexandria. Once in Alexandria, turn left at the third light onto Madison Street. Continue 3 blocks to Royal Street. Take a left on Royal Street. Our building is ahead on your right.

From the Capital Beltway (495)

From the Outer Loop of I-495, take Exit 77-B, Route 1 North. This is the very last exit before crossing the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to Maryland. From the inner loop, coming from Maryland, take Exit 1b, Route 1 North. This is the first exit after crossing the Woodrow Wilson bridge from Maryland. Proceed on Route 1 North to Madison Street (approximately 12 blocks). Turn right onto Madison Street and continue 6 blocks to Royal Street. Take a left on Royal Street. Our building is ahead on your right.

From Reagan National Airport

By car, exit the airport following signs to Alexandria via the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Once in Alexandria, turn left at the third light onto Madison Street. Continue 3 blocks to Royal Street. Take a left on Royal Street. Our building is ahead on your right.

By Metro

Take the blue or yellow line to the Braddock Road station (one stop from Reagan National Airport). By foot, exit the station and walk straight ahead across the parking lot and continue east on either Madison or Wythe Streets. Walk 10 blocks to Royal Street. Take a left on Royal Street. Our building is ahead on your right. By bus, exit the station and take Dash Bus route number AT3 or AT to Royal Street.
