Circle of Community Investors

Late Fall 2006

Washington Business Journal Names New Target To Its List of Community Investors.  The Washington Business Journal released its annual list of "Circle of Community Investors," which included New Target for the third time in four years.  New Target was recognized for its ongoing contributions to the community, most notably for its work with The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria and First Night Alexandria.

The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria

New Target’s President and CEO, Laura Machanic, served as Chairman of The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria, a local 501(c)3 organization that provides college scholarships to graduates of T.C. Williams, Alexandria's public high school.  After serving on the Board of Trustees for two years and after more than five years of being involved in the organization in varying capacities, including supporting their web site, Machanic served as Chairman for the 2004-2005 fiscal year, and then again for a second term from 2005-2006, and still remains active in the organization.

Since 1998, New Target has supported The Scholarship Fund of Alexandria on its web site.  SFA provides last-dollar scholarships to students of Alexandria’s only public high school, T.C. Williams.  Beginning with a simple web site and then undergoing a redesign in 2000, SFA is currently positioned to accept online donations during its annual telethon.

Now one of the Scholarship Fund' business educator partners, New Target is the proud sponsor of its own named scholarship, the New Target Internet Scholarship which will be given each year to a female student who wishes to pursue a career in technology.

First Night Alexandria

New Target President and CEO, Laura Machanic, was named to the First Night Alexandria board in March of 2003 and shortly thereafter donated the company's services to redesign the web site for First Night Alexandria.  Alexandria Mayor, Bill Euille, said, “First Night is a wonderful celebration for all Alexandria! It is a safe way for families and singles of all ages to come together in a safe environment to celebrate the birth of a new year...”

First Night Alexandria is a family celebration through the visual and performing arts, created by and for the community to welcome the New Year.  First Night Alexandria’s mission is to broaden and deepen the public's appreciation of the arts through a diverse and entertaining program that offers a cultural experience.

Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless

Over the 2002 holiday season, New Target sponsored a local family through the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless (AACH).  Our second consecutive year working with AACH,  the family we sponsored consisted of a mother and her four young children.  Family members submitted wish lists and New Target, along with our client The National Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition (HMHB) and fellow building tenants at Lloyd's Row, shopped for, wrapped and delivered presents to our very excited family.  Big thanks to HMHB and our neighbors for their generous support in helping us make a family’s holiday season brighter.

Summer Economics Institute

In the Summer of 2002, New Target sponsored an intern from Alexandria’s Summer Economics Institute.  Drew Abbot, an upcoming senior at St. Stephen’s School, worked at New Target as an HTML technician.  In addition to working four days per week at the company, his internship program included one day per week of field trips and educational experiences.  At the end of the program, Drew won the Outstanding Intern 2002 Award given by the Summer Economics Institute.  Drew was part of a very talented pool of students; his fellow interns worked at companies including The World Bank, ABC News, Sprint, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Northup Grumman.  Together, New Target and Drew were featured in the Alexandria Gazette in a full-page article that highlighted Drew as a student and New Target as a company investing in the community.
