We all hear various marketing terms thrown about, but we don’t always fully appreciate what they mean. Here is the first of several articles designed to give a brief tutorial on important marketing terms.

Marketing Term 1: Breakpoints

A breakpoint is the specific point at which a layout or design changes on a screen. This can be due to different device sizes, orientations, or even browser window widths. In web development, you can use media queries to set different styles for different breakpoints. For example, you may want a narrower layout for screens below a certain size, and a wider layout for screens above that size.

Setting breakpoints is an important part of responsive web design (RWD). With RWD, you can create a website that looks great no matter what device it’s viewed on. By using media queries, you can change the layout, font size, and other elements to ensure that your site looks good on any screen.

Marketing Term 2: Caching

A cache is a temporary data storage mechanism that aids in website speed by storing relevant information on your computer the first time you visit a website. Then, your computer does not have to reload that information each time you access the website again.

Caching is an important part of web development. It speeds up the loading of pages by storing copies of resources that have been previously requested. This can include images, CSS files, and JavaScript files. When a user visits a page that has been cached, the resources are loaded from the local cache instead of being downloaded again from the server. This can speed up page loading times by several seconds.

There are two types of caching: client-side caching and server-side caching. Client-side caching is done by the user’s browser. The browser stores a local copy of the resources that have been requested and uses them to load the pages faster on future visits. Server-side caching is done by the web server. The server stores a copy of the resources and delivers them to the user’s browser faster than if they were being downloaded from the server each time.

Marketing Term 3: Call to Action

A call to action (CTA) is an instruction or request to the reader of a marketing piece to take a specific action, such as visiting a website, subscribing to a newsletter, or making a purchase. CTAs are important because they encourage readers to take some form of desired action, which can help lead to conversions and sales.

There are many different types of CTAs that can be used in marketing materials, depending on the goal of the campaign. Some common CTAs include:

“Subscribe now for discounts.”

“Download our free white paper.”

“Buy now and save 25%.”

When creating your own CTA, it’s important to make it clear and concise and to make sure it stands out from the surrounding text. You may also want to consider using a graphic or button to draw attention to your CTA. And don’t forget to test different versions of your CTA to see which ones are most effective.

Marketing Term 4: Cookies

A cookie is a small piece of data that websites store in your browser. Cookies are used to keep track of your browsing activity and remember your preferences. Cookies can also be used to target you with ads or to share information with third-party companies. Most browsers allow you to disable cookies but doing so may limit your ability to use some websites.

Cookies are often harmless, but they can also be used to track your movements and collect personal information. If you’re concerned about cookies, you can disable them in your browser settings or install a cookie blocker extension. However, be aware that some websites may not work properly if you do this.

Marketing Term 5: Content Management System

A content management system (CMS) is a software application that helps you create, manage, and publish content on the web. A CMS can be used to create and manage any type of content, including text, images, videos, and social media posts.

Most CMSs are open source software, which means they are free to use and customizable. There are many different CMSs available, both free and paid. Some of the most popular CMSs include WordPress, Drupal, and Joomla.

If you want to create a website or blog or publish content on the web, you need a CMS. A CMS can make publishing content on the web much easier and faster than coding your own website from scratch. It also allows you to manage your content more efficiently, making updates and changes easier.
