The Online Marketing Team at New Target loves Google Analytics and its ability to track traffic, number of clicks, location of clicks, user languages, viewer paths and so much more. We enjoy adjusting our keywords, writing new content, and tweaking design to watch the effects. But we understand that if you’re a first time user, it can be a little overwhelming. Here are three basic first steps to get started:
- Set-up a Google Analytics account HERE
- Implement the unique tracking code which Google Analytics will give you on each page of your website. You can paste this tracking code at the bottom of your HTML content just before the or the tag.
- Establish goals and funnels, these will allow you to define the results you want and how you plan on getting there. Goals could be anything from making a purchase to submitting an email address. Funnels are the page to page or link to link path the user takes to accomplish the goal.
Now that you are set up, two fun Google Analytics features to explore are the map overlay report and specific campaign tracking. Map overlay provides a big picture of where in the world your site visitors reside, down to exact city. Specific campaign tracking can be used in newsletters, banner ads, and pay per click keywords, to let you target your audience more effectively.
The team behind Google Analytics is constantly improving the software; recently, the release of Google Analytics Real-Time was announced. These reports allow you to see what is happening on your website as it happens.
