The Agentic Customer Journey: When Bots Browse Before Humans Do

The Shift to the Agentic Customer Journey

Ever since dinosaurs roamed the earth, organizations have built and optimized their websites around the assumptions that the path to them started with a search, a click, a visit, and a decision. This is all changing.

AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude are becoming the first stop for those performing research. Instead of using a search engine and then visiting and comparing ten websites, the users are asking AI to do all this work for them. The job of comparing products, summarizing services, recommending vendors, etc. will be given to the AI who will gather information from many sources and present a concise answer to the user.

This shift is being called the “agentic customer journey,” where the AI agents perform both the search and analysis that the human used to do. Not only is this work by the agent much faster, but its search field is much larger and its ability to come to a satisfying conclusion for the user in just a few seconds is very pleasing.

If your organization can acknowledge this seismic change to the agentic customer journey, you’ll be well positioned as the agentic customer journeys become commonplace.

Your Website Is No Longer Your First Impression

In olden times (two years ago), your website served as the primary place where prospects would learn about your organization. Today, the AI agents will likely interact with your content long before a human visitor does.

For example, a researcher might ask their AI, “Please recommend a nonprofit website design agency with accessibility expertise,” or “Which local charity has a food bank?” What the AI will do, in addition to the old way of searching for keywords, is it will look for evidence to hand back to the researcher.

This evidence will be found from well-structured website content, published expertise, customer success stories, technical documentation, reviews, news coverage, and consistent messaging across the web.

Your website has become a knowledge source rather than simply a destination.

But if you fulfill the criteria suggested in the AI search, but can’t provide the evidence because of how your website is constructed, the AI agent will simply move down the road and select another organization to recommend.

Write for Understanding, Not Just Rankings

Traditional SEO focused heavily on attracting clicks from search engines. AI systems have a different objective: understanding information well enough to summarize it accurately.

That means websites should clearly answer important questions instead of hiding information behind marketing language.

Instead of simply saying your organization delivers “innovative digital solutions,” explain exactly what you do, who you serve, what technologies you specialize in, and what business problems you solve.

Specificity helps both people and AI.

Dedicated pages that explain your services, your industry, technologies, methodologies, and frequently asked questions (FAQs) give AI models far more confidence than vague marketing copy.

Demonstrate Expertise with Real Evidence

The AI agents are capable of distinguishing between claims and expertise that has been demonstrated. Statements like “industry leader,” or “trusted partner” don’t carry much weight on their own. What’s more important are measurable outcomes, client testimonials, or awards that provide actual evidence that the AI can reference when comparing organizations.

Details matter.  The more concrete your examples, the easier they are for both humans and the AI to evaluate.

Structure Content So AI Can Interpret It

Website organization matters as well when it comes to making your organization stand out against the others being looked at by AI. Clear headings, a logical hierarchy, descriptive page titles, and structured data all help the AI systems to understand the relationships between topics.

Rather than placing each service on one long page, created focused pages that answer specific questions and that also explore individual topics at some depth.

This approach improves traditional SEO and also makes your information much easier for AI systems to find and summarize accurately.

Build Authority Beyond Your Website

When your organization is being evaluated by the AI agents, it rarely relies upon a single source to produce its answer. It will compare information from multiple places including industry publications, customer reviews, news articles, and social media profiles. If there is a consistent message across these sources, a better picture and a more reliable one is formed.

Is your core focus understandable no matter where the information is found? Are the facts consistent?

Maintaining a coherent body of content that consistently reinforces your goals and strengths is a must in order to build and maintain confidence and to deliver reliable answers to both humans and AI agents.

Make Trust Easy to Verify

We all make trust signals a significant part of our buying decisions. Helping the AI to be able to make a recommendation of your products or services requires multiple independent signals that all support your claims.

Clear contact information, certifications, security practices, accessibility compliance, customer testimonials, case studies, awards, partner relationships, transparent pricing all contribute to the big picture that shows humans and the AI agents that your organization can back up its claims thus making it more likely for you to be included in its recommendations.

Optimize for Answers, Not Just Visits

The need to have good and reliable content on your website is a given. Today that content needs to be shaped in such a way as to directly address the questions prospects are asking.

Identify the real questions that prospects are asking throughout their journey and create content that answers those questions thoroughly and transparently. Good sources are conversations being had with the sales team, what you’ll find on a support ticket, customer interviews, social media; and you can even ask AI for its “thoughts” as related to your organization.

The goal is to provide the types of answers that a seasoned employee would kindly give were he face to face with a prospect. If asked, he wouldn’t simply state a product’s description or a service but would explain in detail how their offerings solve a problem.

Those who succeed in this new world of AI search will be those whose websites are trusted sources of answers so that the AI agents can confidently recommend their content.
