Search is getting wider

Search is not disappearing. It is widening. Buyers still use Google, but they also ask AI tools for shortlists, compare reviews, listen to peers, and complete a lot of research before a website visit ever appears in analytics.

That creates a real marketing problem. A brand can have a useful website and still be underrepresented in AI answers. It can publish strong content and still be described poorly. It can win the final click while losing the earlier conversation that shaped the shortlist.

This is why Answer Engine Optimization and Digital PR belong in the same conversation. The goal is not to chase a new acronym. The goal is to make sure people and AI systems can find, understand, and trust the organization.

We think about AI search visibility as a connected program. The website has to be crawlable, fast, accessible, and clear. The content has to answer real buyer questions. The broader web has to include reliable proof. None of those pieces is the whole strategy. Together, they create the evidence layer buyers now expect.

Your website still matters

A useful AEO strategy begins with the owned website, because that is where the official story lives. It is the place where services, case studies, leadership, resources, and proof should be easiest to understand.

It also gives search and AI systems material to work with. Google says SEO fundamentals remain relevant for AI Overviews and AI Mode, including crawl access, internal links, page experience, visible text, and structured data that matches the page. OpenAI’s crawler documentation also connects websites directly to ChatGPT search experiences through OAI-SearchBot.

So the better assumption is not that AI engines ignore websites. They do read websites. For broad commercial questions, though, they often depend on third-party corroboration. Your site is necessary, but not sufficient.

Schema is table stakes, not the strategy

Structured data, clean headings, FAQ sections, and answer-first content all help. We recommend them because they improve clarity for people and machines. They also make content easier to maintain inside a CMS.

But schema does not create credibility on its own. A well-structured page can still lose visibility if the brand is absent from reviews, industry coverage, or other trusted sources.

That is the difference between a checklist and a strategy. Bad AEO is a rebranded maintenance list. Good AEO is a measurable visibility discipline. It checks the website, the answers, the citations, the reputation signals, and the gap between how a brand wants to be known and how it is actually being summarized.

AI answers are shaped by proof beyond the website

The clearest data is coming from B2B software, but the pattern is useful for many markets. G2’s 2026 AI Search Insight Report found that 51% of B2B software buyers start research with an AI chatbot more often than Google, and 71% use AI chatbots somewhere in the buying process. Wynter’s 2026 CMO survey found that 84% use AI tools for vendor discovery and 68% start searches with AI before traditional search engines.

Those buyers are not only looking for information. They are looking for confidence. Reviews, peer validation, and trusted third-party coverage help create that confidence. AI tools then compress those signals into a short answer or shortlist.

Pew Research found that Google users who encountered an AI summary clicked a traditional result less often than users who did not see a summary. Cognism’s 2026 inbound report showed a similar business effect inside its own funnel: organic traffic was down year over year while direct MQLs increased.

This does not mean traffic is dead. It means the click is no longer the only valuable outcome. If an AI answer includes a brand, describes it correctly, and cites credible sources, that brand may earn influence before analytics records a visit.

Digital PR is part of AI visibility

Digital PR builds the proof layer off the website. It helps trusted third parties say what a brand cannot simply declare about itself.

The right work depends on the business. For one organization, it may mean earned media and executive commentary. For another, it may mean review development, partner visibility, or customer stories. The point is not to be everywhere. The point is to be present where the audience and the answer engines are already looking.

This work has to be done carefully. Google’s spam policies include attempts to manipulate search rankings or generative AI responses. AI visibility should not be built on fake reviews, hidden advertorials, or low-quality placements. The durable version is earned, accurate, and useful.

When it works, Digital PR supports both sides of modern discovery. People see the brand in credible places. AI systems see consistent entity signals, current descriptions, and corroborating evidence.

Brand still matters because decisions are still human

AI can help create a shortlist. It does not approve the budget, calm the board, or align the buying committee.

Forrester’s 2025 buying-network data found that most purchases involve several departments, with many people inside and outside the organization shaping the decision. That is why brand familiarity still matters. A champion may love the recommendation. The rest of the committee still needs reasons to trust it.

AEO and Digital PR help by making the brand easier to recognize and easier to defend. When stakeholders search, ask an AI assistant or look for public proof, they should find a consistent picture.

How to invest at the right level

The right investment depends on ambition. A business that wants accuracy needs the foundation: a crawlable website, clear service pages, current metadata, structured content, and a basic audit of AI answers.

A business that wants to compete needs an ongoing program. That means recurring prompt testing, content updates, citation tracking, review development, and Digital PR around priority topics. A business that wants to lead a category needs to build a stronger authority engine through research, expert visibility, customer proof, and brand campaigns.

That is the practical way to budget for AI visibility. Match the effort to the goal. Do not buy a dashboard if no one will act on the findings. Do not publish more content if the real gap is third-party proof. Do not chase media mentions if the website cannot clearly explain what the organization does.

What a real AEO program measures

AEO should be measurable. A healthy program tracks whether the brand appears in AI answers for priority questions, how it is described, which competitors appear, which sources are cited, and what information is missing or wrong.

It should also track the inputs that make improvement possible, including technical access, content quality, review velocity, source diversity, brand mentions, referral traffic, branded search, and direct conversions. Not every metric will be perfect. The point is to make the invisible research journey more visible.

The most useful starting point is simple. Ask the questions your buyers are asking. Ask them across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and Google. Save the answers. Read the citations. Then build a plan around what is actually shaping the response.

New Target works at the intersection of websites, digital marketing, analytics, AI readiness, and ongoing support. That makes AEO a natural extension of the work we already believe in: sound platforms, useful content, clear measurement, trustworthy proof, and long-term optimization.

We do not see AEO as a replacement for SEO. We do not see Digital PR as separate from search visibility. We see them as parts of a connected system. SEO helps the website perform. AEO helps the brand show up in answers. Digital PR helps build the external authority those answers rely on. Analytics helps show where the system is working and where it needs attention.

The organizations that benefit most will not be the ones chasing every new acronym. They will be the ones building a credible presence across the places buyers already trust.

In the age of AI search, being found is not enough. Businesses need to be understood, cited, trusted, and remembered. That is the work. Contact us.
